Library Honors a Best Friend and Offers ‘New Look’ at a Summer Evening

Debbie Lennon and Leslie Reed Debbie Lennon and Leslie Reed Friends of the Newport Public Library held its annual summer gala, “A New Look @ A Novel Evening,” on Sunday, June 26, at the library. Gail Lowney Alofsin, a past trustee, current Event Committee member, and longtime supporter of the library, was the honorary—and honored— chair. The fundraiser was also the annual opportunity for supporters of the library to tour the facility, view recent upgrades (among them in the Friends’ bookstore, located on the Spring Street level) and receive updates about attendance and activity in the past year.

Last year the library offered 430 programs for children, teens, and families, with a turnout of nearly 9,000. Plans are also in the works to upgrade the teen and youth areas, both traditionally and technologically.

The Newport Public Library is an independent nonprofit, and is not a department overseen by the city. Its doors are open 64 hours a week, and it is open online 24/7.
