What You Need to Know to Vote in Primary

Newport and Jamestown canvassers are doing everything possible to ensure that those who have registered to vote in the District 13 Special Democratic Primary on Tuesday, July 18, and the subsequent Special Election on Tuesday, Aug. 22, have the opportunity to cast their ballots.

In Newport, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 18 to determine a winner among the four Democrats running for the Senate seat vacated earlier this year by Sen. President Teresa Paiva Weed. The candidates are David Allard, John Florez, Dawn Euer and David Hanos, Jr.

The primary winner faces off against Republican Michael Smith, Green Party candidate Gregory Larson and Independent Kimberly Ripoli.

In Newport, voters registered in Precincts 2102, 2104 or 2109 will cast their ballots at Pell Elementary School, 35 Dexter St. Voters in Precincts 2103, 2105 and 2108 will vote at Donovan Manor, 19 Chapel St. Those registered in Precincts 2106 and 2107 will cast their ballots at the Newport Public Library, 300 Spring St.

Further considerations have been made to voters who cannot make it to the polling places. “We have received an unusually high demand for mail ballots,” said Tracy Nelson, Newport canvassing clerk and elections administrator.

An “emergency voting” scenario has been established by City Hall. People can go to City Hall to vote on July 17 until 4 p.m. If you are in the hospital or residing in an assisted living facility, you may call the canvassing clerk by July 17 at 401-845-5384, or the Board of Elections at 401-222-2345 and a representative will come to the facility to collect your ballot.

In Jamestown, voters in Districts 1 and 2 will cast ballots for the Special Primary at the Lawn Avenue School, 55 Lawn Ave. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For more information, visit the town clerk’s office during regular business hours at 93 Narragansett Ave., from 1 to 4 p.m., call 401- 423-9804, or access the Board of Canvassers webpage at cityofnewport.com.
