The Portsmouth Community Theater in collaboration with the Portsmouth Historical Society will present an original play “Murder at the Coal Mines.” This special event will have one performance only on Friday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at the Common Fence Point Community Center, 933 Anthony Road, Portsmouth.

The play is based on an actual event in Portsmouth history. Marjorie Webster and Gloria Schmidt of the Portsmouth Historical Society uncovered the details of a crime committed in the “coal mines” area of Portsmouth in the 1870s. Schmidt used the press accounts of the crime and trial to write this courtroom drama. Cindy Killavey of the Portsmouth Community Theater is staging and directing this original performance.

More than a dozen actors from five towns come together for debut of the historical drama “Murder at the Coal Mines.” They are: John and Bailey Brennan, Maria Schmidt, and Naill Tarrell from Newport; Rick Bagley from Middletown; Denise Betz, Dave Duggan, Paul Fredette, Bob Hamilton, Jim Killavey, Ron Marsh and Richard Schmidt from Portsmouth; Tanya Kieron from Bristol; and Dennis Ambrose from Tiverton.

Admission is by donation and funds collected will go toward theatrical renovations to the community center.
