The mission of Save The Bay is to protect and improve Narragansett Bay. The mission of Save The Bay is to protect and improve Narragansett Bay. At each stopover, the Volvo racing teams have “teamed up” with a local nonprofit group to learn about local environmental issues and give back to the community.

“We’re thrilled they’ve chosen us,” said Cindy Sabato of Save The Bay.

Vestas 11th Hour Racing (sailors and shore team members) met at Gooseneck Marsh on Ocean Drive on Tuesday morning, May 15, with Save The Bay habitat restoration director, Wenley Ferguson, who gave them a tour of the marsh and explained about marshes: why they’re important, how they’re being affected by storm surge and climate change, and what we’re doing to try to address these impacts.

The group then headed over to Hazard marsh, where they dug in the mud and helped with the ongoing the restoration work there. Finishing up around noon, the team then surprised Save The Bay by presenting it with a $10,000 grant.
