Ditch the Car and Hop on a Bike

May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast.

. Bike to Work Day in Newport is Friday, May 18. Activities kick off from 7-8 a.m. in front of City Hall, 43 Broadway. There’s a bike commuter breakfast with refreshments provided by Empire Tea and Coffee, A-Market, Bagel Boys, and Stop & Shop.

At 4:30 p.m., there will be bike-friendly announcements by partners Bike Newport, RITBA, Discover Newport, and the Newport County YMCA and the Bike Friendly Business of the Year Award.

A celebratory 1.5-mile Community Ride Round Downtown Newport, escorted by Newport Police Department takes place at 4:45 p.m.

. There are more biking activities in the days ahead: Garaje en EspaƱol (May 21), Bike Newport, 62 Broadway, 4:30–7 p.m., free. This is for Spanish speakers to come and work on bikes. No experience necessary. Bring your own bike or take part in our Earn a Bike Program.

. Ladies Night at Bike Garage (May 24); Bike Newport, 62 Broadway, 4:30 - 7p.m., free.

The Bike Garage will be an exclusive and encouraging space for female-identifying bicyclists. This night is a time to bring your own bike project to work on with our female bike mechanic, or just to tinker and practice working with the tools. No mechanical knowledge or experience necessary; just an interest in learning.

. Conversate, Motivate, and Ride (May 26); Bike Newport, 62 Broadway, 1-4 p.m., free. New and beginner riders can learn how to ride, bike safety skills and get comfortable on a bike. If you are getting back on your bike after a long time, perhaps never been on a bike but want to give it a try, then this is for you. Let’s get together and talk about any concerns you have and plan a ride.

. Full Moon Ride (May 29); Meet at Bike Newport, 8 p.m., free.

Conquer the night, ride under the full moon and hear the sounds of the night with us on this Bike Month bike ride through Newport, guided by the full moon. Route will be announced (probably around the ocean loop). All riders are required to bring a bike, helmet, lights and weather-appropriate clothing.
