Common Burying Ground Tours

Free guided tours of the Common Burying Ground in Newport will begin on Saturday, June 9, and will be also offered June 23, July 14, 28, and Aug. 11 and 25. The tour will start at 10 a.m. at the entrance on Warner Street (at Burnside Avenue). The focus will be stones carved in the 1700s, many from the Stevens Shop. A highlight of the visit will be God's Little Acre, the largest collection of gravestones from people of African heritage in Colonial New England, and a review of the recent work of the city in conserving these important historic artifacts. A self-guided tour is available for the site using the information at the Warner Street entrance or the Farewell (southern) entrance.
