(Photo by Robbie Benjamin) Seven visiting sailing teams from five states came to Newport last weekend for the 2018 Ocean Great Lakes Challenge, a 5-race, 10-boat series including three local teams from Newport‘s Shields Fleet 9. Eric Anderson’s sailors from Monterey, Calif., tussled with Ted Slee and Betsy Alison, of Newport, for the title through five races held in light to moderate winds. After Slee/Alison won the first two races easily, it appeared the past national champions would run away with the series, but Anderson’s crew, which included local sailmaker Randy Shore, proved steadier, taking the lead after the fourth race on Saturday and winning the fifth and final race on Sunday. The Regatta was hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club, visitors were housed by local sailors, and the racing was held in boats loaned by members of Fleet 9. The next major Shields Class event will be a “bring your own boat” event, the New England Championships, in Marion, Mass., Aug. 3-5. For more information go to shieldsfleet9.org
