A Look Ahead and A Look Back

To the Editor:

Council Vice President Paul Rodrigues, Councilor Theresa Santos, Councilor Barbara VonVillas, Councilor Henry (Rick) Lombardi and Councilor Dennis Turano, the citizens of Middletown have shown their support and have acknowledged your past contributions and accomplishments by entrusting you once again to represent them over the next two years. You are to be commended. To newly elected Councilor Terri Flynn, we welcome you to a team that is committed to representing all Middletowners.

To say that I’m excited about this team would be an understatement: I am anxiously looking forward to continuing to work with each of you.

I want to thank our Administrator Shawn Brown for his continued tireless efforts and his proactive approach. His actions in conjunction with our Council has saved our tax-payers millions of dollars in tax revenue over the years.

I also want to recognize our entire staff for their support and their continued dedication. Middletown’s staff is second to none and I appreciate all that they do. I want to acknowledge our Town employees who have contributed every year by coming to the bargaining table with an open mind and a compassionate understanding of the State of our Town, they too should be recognized and applauded for their efforts.

We have numerous volunteer committees whose members spend countless hours of their own time contributing to the betterment of Middletown. They are truly the most valuable players when it comes to our overall success, and I thank them all.

The last several years have been economically challenging for all of us. We have utilized cost-cutting measures, including the consolidation of departments; the Council, in coordination with our administrator and his staff has streamlined our town government, and we will continue to evaluate all expenditures going forward. We have successfully trimmed expenses while maintaining the same quality of service that the citizens of Middletown have been accustomed to, this too is a remarkable accomplishment.

The last two-years have also been extremely busy, but much has been accomplished.

As we go into this new year, we will take what we’ve learned over the last couple of years. We will continue working on projects currently in the pipeline.

We will continue to conduct our business with full transparency, utilizing open public meetings to solicit total and absolute input from every resident and taxpayer. Every resident will have the opportunity to weigh in on every issue that directly affects their quality of life, this I promise you.

In closing, I wish to thank the citizens of Middletown for the privilege of serving as a member of this Council. To the members of this Council, I thank you again for the confidence you have shown in me by electing me president.

I take this responsibility and the trust you have shown in me very seriously. I’m committed to serving the people of Middletown to the best of my abilities, and I will continue to do so with enthusiasm, compassion and devotion to our community.

Robert J. Sylvia
Middletown Council, President
