Music and Movement

At a school-wide assembly, energized Pell Elementary students recently gave culminating movement performances before classmates and parents. Island Moving Company returned to Pell last week with state of the art programs developed to integrate movement into state mandated core curriculum standards. The longstanding collaboration between Newport’s commentary ballet company and public school district reaches every first, second, and third grader in the district each year with Math into Movement, Creative Movement, or Text into Movement. Each of the programs were developed by teams including classroom teachers, district educators, and professional dancers in response to needs identified by the district. The programs are funded through a mix of support from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, local PTO’s, school budgets, and private donors. During the 2017-18 school year, IMC’s core curriculum based dance programs were delivered in 243 instructional hours to more than 2,000 students in Newport County public schools.
